Originating in Brighton in the 1920s, this is a tried and tested seed variety. This is probably not a variety we would choose to force (early under film), as it is so valuable as a late season variety.
The thick and juicy stalks have more of a green tint than many other rhubarb varieties and are also much 'milder'.
But where this variety truly excels is its long harvesting season. Due to the naturally low levels of oxalic acid (the substance that causes bitterness in rhubarb) and the fact that these levels do not increase (as with many other varieties) as the season progresses, this type of rhubarb can be harvested later in the summer and even into early autumn. However, leave enough leaves and stalks on the plant so that it remains strong...!
Rhubarb from seed never produces a 100% homogeneous variety. You can select based on the (small) differences yourself: You start harvesting the earliest flowering plants earlier, and you can continue harvesting the later flowering plants for longer. This way you get a nice production field!
