A vital food product in South America, interesting to try here! This annual species belongs to the same genus as good-king-henry and strawberry spinach. The leaves can be eaten like spinach, and the flower spikes produce protein- and vitamin-rich seeds that taste like rice. The plant grows to 1m tall and thrives in Peru and Bolivia up to an altitude of 4500m!
'Sandoval' is an old and trusted Northern European mix of early, mid-season, and late-ripening spikes that produce seeds for months and create a beautiful array of colours in the garden! Rinse the harvested seeds under gently running water (in a kitchen sieve) until the water runs clear; this removes the bitter saponin.
10-25 g is sufficient for 25 m². Aim for 50-150 plants per m²
