A staple food in South America, interesting to try here!
Since the beginning of the 21st century, our grower has been breeding and selecting suitable quinoa varieties for Northern Europe (including Scandinavia!) from (mainly) Chilean and Peruvian quinoa. This variety, Vikinga, has medium-sized, white seeds and can be harvested mid-early. Vikinga is saponin-free, which is a bitter substance present in the seed coat that negatively affects the taste. Saponin-free means one less treatment after cleaning and drying the seeds.
Quinoa is an annual plant and belongs to the same genus as orache, Good King Henry, and strawberry spinach. The leaves can be eaten like spinach, and the flowering panicles produce protein- and vitamin-rich seeds that taste like rice. The plant grows 1m tall and in Peru and Bolivia, it even grows up to 4500 m in altitude!
10-25 g is enough for 25 m². Aim for 50-150 plants per m²
