What a versatile and graceful plant! It originally comes from the warm parts of Asia. There (and now also here), the flowers, flower buds, leaves, seeds, and fruits are eaten as a vegetable after cooking or stir-frying, but are also added to curry, which is a mixture of spices. The gum is also edible!
Many parts of the plant are mildly laxative.
This tub plant (not frost-resistant) is also called an orchid tree, and I understand why: the round, two-lobed leaf is already very fresh and graceful, but the orchid-like flowers take the crown. This variety produces lilac-pink flowers.
The plant has many names in many countries, we'll list them: Orchid Tree, Purple Butterfly Tree, Mountain Ebony, Geranium Tree, Purple Bauhinia.
