A substantial tree, ideal for a food forest or a large garden and suitable for all soil types, but they do love moisture! This relative of the Walnut also thrives in a large pot and can then be grown as a maxi-bonsai. The delicious, edible nuts resemble pecans in shape and growth habit and are wonderfully sweet in taste! The nuts appear in clusters on the tree, the shell is reddish-brown in color. As soon as the shell bursts open, the nuts are visible and ripe for picking; you can eat them raw or roasted. Despite the name, the nuts are absolutely not bitter; they are a bit smaller than the King Nut. Also enjoy the golden-yellow autumn color before the leaves fall... The tough hickory wood, widely used for tools such as axes, hammers, etc., is made from the wood of this tree.
