This old, very tasty variety is fortunately still cultivated by enthusiasts (read "go-getters")! It is a late-ripening variety with large fruits (1.5 to 2.5 kg). The fruits are slightly high-round, not ribbed, and develop a light netting on the skin when ripe. As they ripen, the skin changes from white to ocher yellow. The flesh is green and very tasty (high sugar content). The plants grow moderately to vigorously. Relatively few female flowers are formed. Fruit set and fruit development are quite difficult with this variety. Due to aging and sometimes the dieback of the crop, a second setting often does not occur. All in all, 'Witte Suiker' is a variety for gourmets who are content with a small harvest. In the past, 'Witte Suiker' was occasionally cultivated in Dutch professional horticulture, and some fruits of this variety appeared on the market. Because the commercial cultivation of melons in the Netherlands has virtually disappeared and this variety has no significance in foreign commercial cultivation, you will therefore no longer find 'Witte Suiker' at specialized greengrocers: a (almost) forgotten vegetable!
