A melon of very old French tradition. The Bishop of Rennes already mentioned it around 1600! The small fruits yield pulp that "melts on the tongue" with the sweetness of brown sugar. Still a culinary delicacy, for example in Cesson-Sévigné.
Cantaloupe or Net melon (Reticulatus group) Vining, with musky aroma and scent, lobed and (often) heart-shaped leaves. The flesh is orange or green and the skin is always netted. Cantaloup is the French spelling for the Italian Cantaluppi, the estate of the popes, where in the early Middle Ages melons from the then accessible world were collected and cultivated.
