True Cantaloupe (Cantalupensis group) Very old, beautiful varieties. Typical characteristics include a rough, bumpy or warty rind. The fruit exudes a musky aroma and scent, the leaves are lobed and (often) heart-shaped. The flesh is orange or green and the rind is always netted. Cantaloup (Dutch: Kanteloep) is the French spelling for the Italian Cantaluppi, the popes' estate, where in the early Middle Ages melons from the then accessible world were collected and cultivated.
