These small melons originate from the northern state of Oregon, cultivated by Tim Peters. There, the fruits ripen in the open ground, which offers good hope for Dutch cultivation! Harvest the green fruits when they just start to turn yellowish, not too ripe, as the flavour will become musty. The bright orange flesh is wonderfully fresh and sweet.
Cantaloupe or Netted Melon (Reticulatus group) Vining, with a musky aroma and scent, lobed and (often) heart-shaped leaves. The flesh is orange or green and the rind is always netted. Cantaloupe is the French spelling for the Italian Cantaluppi, the popes' estate, where in the early Middle Ages, melons from the then accessible world were collected and cultivated.
