The French are very fond of this type, which originates from Poitou-Charentes, where this refined Cantaloupe melon appeared around 1920. The rough skin has been bred out; the grey-blue to light yellow, smooth skin has shallow folds. The taste and smell of the finely structured orange flesh are exceptionally good; I even read "divine" somewhere...! As a grower, you have an advantage: the very sweet fruits have too thin a skin to be commercialized. Some chefs peel the fruit.
True Cantaloupe (Cantalupensis group) Very old, beautiful varieties. Typical are the rough, bumpy or warty skin. The fruit exudes a musk aroma and scent, the leaf is lobed and (often) heart-shaped. The flesh is orange or green and the skin is always netted. Cantaloup (Dutch: Kanteloep) is the French spelling for the Italian Cantaluppi, the popes' estate, where in the early Middle Ages melons from the then accessible world were collected and cultivated.
