A very old annual cultivated crop from the Old World. Its white flowers and sturdy palmate leaves are an adornment in the garden! Its deep roots improve soil structure, and lupine is capable of binding nitrogen from the air, fixing it in the soil. Furthermore, this large-seeded variety is also eaten: roasted, boiled (first soak for a long time and discard the soaking water, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lupin_poisoning), or ground into flour: very rich in protein! Tremoços is to the Portuguese what Edamame is to the Japanese: Delicious snacking on these salted lupine beans with a drink...
PLEASE NOTE: LUPINE ALLERGY EXISTS, WHICH IS CLOSE TO NUT ALLERGY.
