Brussels Sprout 'Groninger (Stiekema)'

  • Product number: 177790
  • Origin: Europe
  • Latin: Brassica oleracea

Before the era of professional hybrid sprouts, this was a popular early sprout. For the hobbyist, this is an ideal variety: reasonably early harvest, but not all at once! (Dec-Jan). The taste is remarkably mild for an old variety!

A little frost gives all Brussels sprout varieties a milder taste because starch in the sprout is converted into sugar. The sprouts can also be frozen to achieve a similar effect. Before freezing, they should first be blanched in boiling water for about three minutes. This way, Mother Nature can be approximated to obtain that (even) milder taste.
