- Product number: 167880
- Origin: Europe
- Latin: Brassica oleracea
Vates is an old and trusted variety with silver-green, smooth, and crisp leaves. The plant can be harvested very young or when fully grown. Young for salads and older for stir-fries or stews.
This type is one of the oldest cabbages in cultivation. The Romans brought them to Northern Europe. Loose leaf cabbage has become quite popular in the US as Collard Green. You can find them in gardens, at Organic Markets, and even in supermarkets. In Brazil, Portugal, and North Africa, they are also widely found, for example, under the name “Couve Portuguese”. Cultivation is very easy; they only tend to bolt during the hottest days. Ideal for spring, autumn, and winter cultivation.
