An elegant, loose-growing cabbage, with fairly round, dark green leaves and bright white veins. This variety was often on the table in the Middle Ages. For summer, autumn or winter cultivation, reasonably hardy.
Marrowstem kale is a group name for varieties related to kale (called "Kale" in English), which have a sturdy stem. Its origin in Europe dates back to Roman times. Even then, humans and animals used this fertile cabbage. The leaves or young shoots (precursors to Brussels sprouts) are picked, and the nutritious stems were/are eaten by livestock. Growth is usually fast, and the plants remain healthy throughout the winter. This results in a cabbage on a stem, also called tree cabbage or Tree Collard. Prune the flowers for good health and years of cabbage enjoyment!
