This is the original broccoli, as it has been cultivated for centuries! It probably arrived in England during Roman times and has since become very popular, especially along the south coast. The plant overwinters and in the 2nd year (from February to April) yields the first harvest of tender flower stalks (soft as asparagus) with an abundance of creamy-white florets at the top. You can harvest them when they are still deep in bud, or a little riper is also fine. The plant can last for years; pruning rejuvenates it. Provide extra protection if severe frost is forecast...
