An Italian delicacy (especially in Apulia, where the city of Lecce is located), this dark green, somewhat elongated melon cucumber! The flesh becomes sweeter and softer as it ripens. Eventually, they turn orange-yellow and are then truly comparable to regular melons. Usually, the fruits are eaten unripe (like cucumbers) and are then pleasantly fresh and slightly sweeter than regular cucumbers.
Grow them in a greenhouse or in a warm and sheltered spot outdoors. It could well be that this variety eventually reached us from China via the Silk Road, where they are also popular in certain regions! In Lecce, this variety is considered a true regional product: "prodotto tipici".
Melon cucumber (Flexuosus group) Elongated, cucumber-like fruits with a firm, fresh, yet melon-sweet taste experience. We have classified them with cucumbers due to their shape.
