Persimmon, American

  • Product number: 121100
  • Origin: North America
  • Latin: Diospyros virginiana

The persimmon is gaining increasing attention; we now have tropical and hardy varieties in our assortment. This small to medium-sized fruit tree is completely hardy with us. The beautiful autumn colour of the leaves is striking, making the tree an attractive addition to any garden. In older age, the beautiful cork bark is a standout feature. Due to its dioecious nature, multiple trees are needed for fruit set, which can occur after just 6 years. The ripe, round, orange-red fruits can be deliciously eaten fresh and contain a lot of vitamin C. The pulp is tasty as a compote, and a beneficial tea can be made from the leaves. Finally, the roasted seeds make for a decent (substitute) coffee.
