It's nice to get to know the plant of this beautiful fruit! The green to light purple skin sits like oval scales around the fruit. The flesh is white and creamy with many (inedible) seeds. The taste is unique but reminiscent of pineapple and strawberries. Its origin lies in South America (Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia, and Chile) and it grows there at an altitude of 1000-2000 m. Cultivation in pots in the Netherlands is experimental; overwintering must be well frost-free.
