One of the most delicious rosehips comes from the Dog Rose. This wild rose was used in ancient medicine against rabies, hence its name. Give them a sunny spot, preferably in calcareous soil; they first bloom with white to light pink flowers, which are popular with bees. If you leave the hips on, birds (redwings, fieldfares, etc.) will have a tasty snack in winter. A hedge of Rosa canina is very burglar-proof; the shrubs grow quite large and have sharp thorns.
