It was on the verge of disappearing, but the Dik Trom pea is back in full force. That won't surprise you once you've tasted them: The Dik Trom pea is not only surprisingly delicious, but also fits perfectly into a vegetarian menu: rich in protein, iron, and vitamins, and also cholesterol-lowering.
The thick, round pea (living up to its name) grows in its original home in Friesland and, of course, everywhere else in our country. This pea is slightly sweeter than most other peas and gives a slightly sweeter taste to a traditional pea soup.
Our grower Piet Hoekstra from St. Jacobiparochie cultivates the 'Dik Trom' peas. These (together with the Kollumer Zoete Grauwe Erwt 095000) have the regional quality mark "Waddengoud". Both varieties were almost extinct...!
Dik Trom is a green pea variety, selected by Ubbo Mansholt, and first appeared in 1962. It was very popular between 1962 and 1980, just like the books, but then gradually disappeared from the scene. The cultivation of dried peas plummeted from over 35,000 hectares in 1988 to 600 hectares in 2013. Consumers opted for faster and easier food over fresh dried peas with long preparation times. By the way, you can, of course, also shell Dik Trom fresh. Piet Hoekstra from Sint Jacobiparochie has successfully re-established a flourishing cultivation of the Dik Trom with just a handful of seeds from the Gene Bank in Wageningen.
