These giant melons can weigh up to 30 kg and are an important food source in the Middle East. Botanically, it is a watermelon, but the fruits are not used as such because the flesh contains pectin. This does, however, provide an ideal application for supplementing and thickening jam, and the flesh is also a nice addition to chutneys, pickles and as a vegetable substitute for gelatin.
The fruits can be stored for a long time at room temperature after harvesting. The taste is pleasantly sour like lemon, but it does need to be cooked first.
The plant has enormous growth power, you can expect tendrils up to 10 metres (!) and a large harvest in a warm summer. The seeds are green, unlike the red-seeded round “brother” (072200)
