The only citrus that overwinters well in our climate! The spiky shrubs lose their leaves in winter and can tolerate temperatures down to -20C. After the white (usually fragrant) blossoms, the rather small fruits appear, turning from green to light orange: very sour! The peel is delicious in jams and the juice can be used very well in cooking and baking. Highly recommended, also for bonsai! This species is often used as a rootstock for other citrus varieties. Strong results have also been achieved with crosses between this winter king and other citrus fruits.
