A beautiful red chicory with long, narrow, bright red, curly leaves and thick, bright white veins. The harvested heads may only be called Radicchio di Treviso if they are grown in protected regions in Italy, so feel free to give them another name and enjoy! A few weeks before harvesting, you can tie the heads together or bleach them under a dark bucket; a traditional cultivation method is similar to endive without a covering layer, with the roots in a layer of groundwater in a dark tank.
The chicory family includes endive, frizzy endive, and various types of chicory. Characteristic is the more or less present "bitterness," formerly disliked and now highly valued. Let a plant "bolt" once: chicory flowers are usually beautifully blue and smell of vanilla!
