Finally, a quality red chicory for the Dutch climate! Its piquant flavour is unique for Italian salads. Its growth is comparable to iceberg lettuce; a purple-red, round-shaped head develops in the centre of the red-green leaves, showing white streaks when peeled open. Sow from May to July, harvestable from August to November.
The chicory family includes endive, Capuchin beard, and various types of chicory. Characteristic is the more or less present "bitterness", formerly despised and now highly valued. Let a plant "bolt" once: chicory flowers are usually beautifully blue in colour and smell of vanilla!
