Broad Beans 'Lange- of Leidse Hangers' 100g

  • Product number: 050050
  • Origin: Mediterranean region
  • Latin: Broad bean

A brown-boiling variety (old-fashioned broad bean flavour and suitable for freezing) with long pods of 30 cm. They yield a good harvest of 5-7 beans per pod. White-black flowering and quite late ripening. This is one of the few remaining varieties with a black navel, formerly called "farmer's toes" because the shape of a toe (which is indeed recognizable in broad beans) was combined with a farmer's dirty nails (the black navel of the bean). But forget this story during your delicious meal!

Names:
Latin: Vicia faba
Dutch: Tuinbonen
Also known as: Roomse Bonen, Grote Bonen

“Ik ben in de bonen” (I'm in the beans) means: “I'm confused”. According to Van Dale's Great Dictionary of Expressions (2006), this saying goes back to an old superstition. People used to believe that broad beans, when in bloom, emitted an intoxicating scent that could even lead to madness if one fell asleep near them.
