A beautiful historic bean with strong growth and wide applications!
The climbing bean plants bloom beautifully with lilac-pink flowers, which develop into green bean pods (12-15 cm long) with purple speckles. When young, these beans are delicious as green beans; when a little more mature, they are good as a runner bean or slicing bean. When fully ripe, the beautifully striped beans emerge, which you can shell fresh as flageolet beans or let dry. The dried beans can be stored for years and have a smooth, mild taste.
This bean is very popular (though now rare) in Australia. This variety was certainly offered in Sydney around 1860.
