Available since 1889 and still a strong East Frisian and Groningen variety. Fairly early to harvest with a long harvesting period. The rather short, wide pods (13 cm long, 11 mm wide) are fleshy and very tasty. We receive all sorts of superlatives from customers... Can be used as a fresh bean, but also as a bacon and slice bean. The light green pods have red stripes, which disappear after cooking, they are stringless and white-seeded. In the past, the pods were threaded onto a string and dried for the winter (so-called 'Knipselbonen'): To dry, pick the beans when they start to turn yellow. Then remove the strings and thread them onto a string and dry (for example, in the attic, in the past by the chimney). Before cooking, soak the dry pods overnight. This way, even a poor family could get through the winter healthily! A typical East Frisian and Groningen variety! Related to this variety is the 'Groninger Weekschil', more info see http://www.knipselbonen.nl/
