The origin of the first stringless bean is shrouded in the mists of history. What is certain is that this stringless variety was already known in North America in 1810 and originated from German immigrants. Americans apparently considered shelling beans a typical housewife's chore, so because this variety has no strings, the humorous name "Lazy Housewife" emerged... but then again, washing machines didn't even exist yet! Incidentally, the plant yields a large harvest of long, fleshy beans, which are/were eaten fresh or as dried beans.
