Everyone wants vegetables in their ornamental garden like this! The golden-yellow foliage climbs quickly and strongly against fences, trellises, or poles. The vivid contrast with the orange-red flowers is beautiful. After flowering, delicious runner beans grow, which are best picked young. Picking young also encourages good continued flowering.
Runner beans are very hardy beans; use the climbing varieties as a windbreak for common green beans; picked young, they are at least as tasty. If the beans hang too long, the individual beans (seeds) can be shelled. These are known as 'potato beans'. Runner beans are also quite resistant to salty winds.
