This runner bean is unique: purple pods! A particularly striking appearance after the elegant, orange-red bloom. If you let the pods ripen a little, the beans are bright pink and can be shelled fresh. When fully ripe, the seeds become lilac-pink with black spots and speckles. This special runner bean is climbing.
Runner beans are very sturdy beans. Use the climbing varieties as a windbreak for common French beans; when picked young, they are just as tasty. If the beans hang for too long, the individual beans (seeds) can be shelled. These are known as 'potato beans'. Runner beans are also quite resistant to salty wind.
