A tropical plant from arid regions, the plant can be kept outdoors during summer, but ensure good drainage in case of heavy rain...
The leaves are small and the inconspicuous, greenish-yellow flowers have a delightful fragrance. After flowering, fruits appear that look like peanuts and turn reddish-pink when ripe.
The seed pods contain a sweet (slightly sour) white pulp that is eaten raw in Mexico, the Philippines, Pakistan, Qatar, and India as a side dish with various meat dishes and as a base for drinks with sugar and water ('agua de guamúchil'). The seeds, by the way, are pitch black.
All parts of the plants are used in traditional medicine.
