This tropical vine has an unusual size. The plant produces short, very wide, heart-shaped fruits (14 cm long and 10 cm wide at the top, tapering to 7 cm at the bottom). The color is light green, the taste is distinctly bitter, but for that very reason, it is highly valued in Asian and Surinamese cuisine (which has tricks to partially neutralize the bitter substance). They yield a good harvest of 400 grams per fruit.
Tropical climbing plant that produces soft, bitter fruits with a bumpy to very warty skin; known in all tropical countries. When the fruits are (over)ripe, they curl open to reveal a beautiful orange interior.
