It's a wonder this plant isn't more widely known...! It's easy to cultivate, the small white flowers (in autumn) are elegant, and the slow-ripening fruits (taking a year) create a beautiful combination of blooms and fruit. The taste is tropical and pleasantly unique; eating too many in a row is not recommended due to potential stomach fermentation. First grow it in a pot, then plant it in a greenhouse or in a well-drained spot in the garden. This small tree is reasonably hardy, down to -16°C. Growth in Northern Europe is quite slow: up to 2 meters in 5 years, topping out at 3 meters, except in very sheltered locations. In the subtropics with sufficient moisture, the tree can grow up to 10 meters tall.
