A delicious yet notorious tuber...
Delicious: The tubers can be harvested in the autumn and taste wonderfully "nutty" raw or in a stir-fry. You can roast them for a tasty coffee or chocolate milk substitute. In Spain, these tubers are used to make the famous horchata, a milky drink with a nutty flavour. The tuber has been known (and cultivated) for centuries in Africa, Asia and Europe. They have been found in Egyptian tombs dating back to 2400 BC, and the Zulu people have known the tuber since time immemorial as an aid to digestion and an improvement to breath odour.
Notorious: Horticulture can suffer greatly from the wild form of this plant, a disastrous weed in bulb and potato cultivation. Our variety, however, is not vining and does not flower, so it does not produce seeds. So you don't have to worry about being a nuisance to your neighbour who is a bulb farmer.
