This perennial grass is (rare but) native to the Netherlands, with a striking toffee-like hay scent! The height varies between 20-100 cm depending on soil type and moisture supply. In the past, the grass was scattered in front of church doors on holy days. In France, it is known as a flavoring in sweets, tobacco, lemonade, and perfumes. In Russia and Poland, its ancient use as a tea and current use as a flavoring in vodka are known. Native Americans in North America use the plant in rituals and make baskets from its long leaves.
