Santorini Oregano 'Santorini Bells' / 'Kent Beauty' / 'Pagoda'

This relative of the well-known Oregano (wild marjoram) and Marjoram (annual marjoram) is particularly beautiful! The round leaves grow so closely together that they overlap, and most striking is the abundance of pink to lilac flowers, which emerge from a row of green-pink bracts: just like hop cones. It is no surprise that all this beauty also has a very ancient herbal history when we realize that this plant originally comes from Santorini, an island with a civilization at least 5000 years old, although a volcanic eruption in 1500 BC marked the end of the culture of that time! The leaves are wonderfully fresh and spicy in salads, its use as a flavoring in pasta sauces is well known, but also as a flavor enhancer in Vermouth. Of course, many medicinal and healing effects have been attributed to this herb, feel free to try it!
