This old Japanese selection (circa 1800) is still highly valued! The trees grow vigorously and have high cold tolerance. The orange fruits contain delicious sweet, orange-red pulp. Expect a harvest in November, by which time the leaves will have fallen... The fruits contain no tannic acid, so they can be deliciously nibbled even when slightly unripe. For the professional grower, it is important to note: very high productivity and good fruit quality. We supply grafted plants that can bear fruit after 3 years.
Kaki, Persimmon, and Date Plum
These deciduous trees (3-5 m) grow in subtropical regions and are increasingly able to grow and bear fruit well here. Give them a sunny spot, preferably protected from north and east winds. They are all 3 species of the genus Diospyros, and we are increasingly seeing successful varieties.
Some varieties are astringent until fully ripe, caused by tannic acid, but the ripe fruits are then heavenly delicious! Other varieties lack this astringent taste and can even be eaten when they still have a “bite.” Ripe fruits are rich in vitamins A and C.
Some varieties are self-pollinating and therefore seedless; however, they often remain smaller and drop earlier. These same varieties produce larger fruits with seeds when cross-pollinated.
The trees bloom around May with inconspicuous flowers; for good production, it is useful to plant different varieties. We supply plants that have passed their weakest period; protection is recommended for the first 5 years during a harsh winter. Birds can peck at the fruits; a bird net helps against this. Allow the fruits to ripen further even after leaf fall; a light frost helps break down the tannins. Harvesting slightly unripe and allowing them to ripen (with other ripe fruit) usually works very well. Do not prune too much, but maintain air and light in the trees. Kaki varieties prefer light clay soil but will thrive in most soil types. However, Kaki does not tolerate very acidic or poorly draining soil.
