Pomegranate 'Dente di Cavello'

  • Product number: 822200.1
  • Origin: Mediterranean region
  • Latin: Punica granatum

One of the most well-known fruits, cultivated in countries around the Mediterranean Sea. In our climate, the plant must be grown in a large pot, overwinter frost-free, and is then deciduous. It's really cool to see how the elegant, orange flowers grow into real pomegranates! For centuries, cultivation has been known for consumption or for religious interpretations. The fruit is very juicy and contains large cells like a citrus fruit, but each cell contains a seed of about 3 mm in size. Around the seeds is a kind of jelly, similar to the seeds of a tomato. In addition, the fruit contains many membranes. Because the membranes do not taste good, eating the fruit requires carefully peeling each cell. In ripe fruits, the flesh is dark red. The skin is very firm and leathery. The fruit can be juiced, although a lot of pulp is lost in the process. Pomegranate juice originally formed the basis for grenadine. Grenadine has long been the general name for all sorts of syrups, much like lemonade syrup is now. Nowadays, it is a type of lemonade syrup used in cocktails, such as in tequila sunrise, and grenadine is no longer made from pomegranate juice, but is a mixture of other fruits.
