Strawberry tree

  • Product number: 818200.1
  • Origin: Mediterranean region
  • Latin: Arbutus unedo

It's amazing this plant isn't more well-known! It's easy to grow, the white flowers (in autumn) are elegant, and the slowly ripening fruits (taking a year) create a beautiful combination of blooms and fruit. The taste is tropical and pleasantly unique; eating too many in a row is not recommended due to possible stomach fermentation. First grow it in a pot, then plant it in a greenhouse or in a not-too-wet spot in the garden. The small tree is reasonably hardy, down to -16°C. Growth in Northern Europe is rather slow: up to 2 meters in 5 years, topping out at 3 meters, except in very sheltered locations. In the subtropics with sufficient moisture, the tree can grow up to 10 meters tall.
