(1999) A lovely, early-flowering garden variety with large flowers, but compact and sturdy enough to hold the bloom upright... The height is 60-80 cm and the semi-double flowers start pink-red and at full bloom a captivating play of lines of pink, red and white emerges, the flower shows its beautiful heart with stamens and pistil, together with a light sweet scent this ensures grateful insect visits.
This is a so-called Itoh hybrid, a little background story: An Itoh peony, also known as an intersectional peony, is a hybrid plant resulting from a cross between a woody tree peony and a herbaceous peony. These peonies combine the best characteristics of both parents: they have the rich bloom and large flowers of a tree peony, combined with the strong, upright stems and deeply cut leaves of a herbaceous peony. Itoh peonies are winter hardy, easy plants that, once established, can produce many flowers.
After years of experience in the Netherlands, our grower has compiled a TOP assortment of the most beautiful and successful peonies.
They grow in all soil types:
In clay, growth is problem-free, do not fertilize too much and ensure good drainage.
In sand, the plants remain somewhat smaller, sufficient fertilization keeps the plant at its best.
In peat soil, growth generally goes well, however, the plants will need to be replanted or renewed slightly earlier.
Place peonies in a sunny spot, plant them (immediately after arrival) so shallowly that there are only a few cm of soil above the roots, first press the soil down.
We supply bare roots, each plant has grown for 4-5 years, so the chance of quick blooming is high! Some varieties grow into their intended, (double) form as they get older. Colors can vary slightly from year to year and depend on the preceding winter cold. Because we have to wait until the plants have died off naturally, the roots are only available from October at the earliest.
