(2001) First, a few exclamations to pique your curiosity: unparalleled in taste, firm in texture, beautiful orange-yellow flesh, and ready in just 10 minutes! In Bolivia, this potato is known as “papas amarillas” = yellow potato and is (also there) much loved for its flavor. Actually, the name ‘Mayan’ is not quite right: ‘Inca Gold’ would have been better, as the tubers originally do not grow in the Mayan area... This rare potato is not only firm but also very waxy and nutty in flavor, combined with a dry texture. The tubers are suitable for boiling, baking, (thin) chips, and frying. It is not a storage potato, so start enjoying them immediately!
Most of our potatoes descend from Peruvian and South Chilean species (Solanum tuberosum). In the higher parts of the Andes, in Bolivia, Solanum phureja grows in a variety of cultivated forms that have been grown there for centuries. The Scottish Crop Research Institute has succeeded in developing varieties suitable for our climate. Due to its unique taste and color, it is very popular with curious and innovative chefs! Cook them gently over low heat for about 8 minutes, then drain and let them steam in a covered pot.
The appearance of the plants: they grow quite wide, so give them space; they bloom with graceful purple flowers and bear characteristically narrow, wrinkled leaves.
MAIN CROP VARIETY FOR GOURMETS.
A main crop variety means it can be harvested from September. Early planting can move this forward by a few weeks. Planting time is from mid-April, when the soil is sufficiently warm. Pre-sprouting in light or in a large pot can be done earlier. Do not place them in too wet a spot, but in full sun. Main crop varieties can suffer from the feared potato blight (Phytophthora infestans). Some preventive measures include: spacious planting, fertilizing with patentkali, do not spray water over the plant, and possibly organic spraying with sulfur or silinal. The average planting distance is 70x40 cm; we recommend maintaining 80x40 cm to prevent diseases.
