Potatoes 'Red Cardinal' / 'Highland Burgundy Red'

  • Product number: 406450.1
  • Origin: Europe
  • Latin: Solanum tuberosum

(1936?) A special Scottish variety, with a bright red skin, highly sought after by connoisseurs! Currently the only European cultivated variety with red tuber flesh! Just under the skin, the tuber flesh is yellow, and in the center, the tubers are more or less marbled red. A chef's dream for cooking 3 colors of potatoes: red, white, and purple… One of the photos shows the color of chips made from Red Cardinal and Blaue Congo. The red coloring is caused by the natural presence of Pelargonidin, an antioxidant with recognized health benefits. They ripen mid-season, are floury, the plant has beautiful red stems, and white blossoms rarely appear. The story goes that this variety was bred on behalf of the Duke of Burgundy in Savoy; it was probably a non-reigning noble, as Savoy was no longer independent at that time. In prolonged drought, keep the soil moist (do not pour over the leaves) and cover the soil with a thick layer of mulch, for example, in the form of mown grass to prevent secondary growth. This is also recommended for all potatoes.

MID-EARLY VARIETY FOR CONNOISSEURS.
A mid-early variety means it can be harvested from August. Harvesting a few weeks earlier can be achieved by planting sooner. Planting time is from mid-April, when the soil is warm enough. Pre-sprouting in light or in a large pot can be done earlier. Do not place them in too wet a spot, but ensure they get plenty of sun. Mid-early varieties can suffer from the dreaded potato blight (Phytophthora infestans). Some preventive measures include: spacious planting, fertilizing with patentkali, not spraying water over the plant, and possibly organic spraying with sulfur or silinal. The average planting distance is 70x40 cm, we recommend maintaining 80x40 cm to prevent diseases.
