'La Bonnotte' potatoes

  • Product number: 405250.1
  • Origin: Europe
  • Latin: Solanum tuberosum

(before 1900) Especially when grown on saline soil, this variety acquires its unique taste. Outside of that, it remains a very tasty potato, but it may not bear the name 'La Bonnotte de Noirmoutier'. In that case, stick to 'La Bonnotte'... Due to its special and limited cultivation area (see below), this potato is the most expensive in the world.
History:
The origin of this regional variety is unknown, but it is certain that on the island of Noirmoutier, this variety was planted early in the 19th century for a prime harvest. After World War I, an island farmer with a good memory rediscovered this variety near Barfleur. Despite primitive cultivation methods and small harvests, this variety is considered one of the tastiest by the residents of Paris. This variety did not survive the early 1960s, with its increasing agricultural modernization. Around 1990, (because the time was right again) it was successfully bred back to its old form, from remnants that were still cultivated. Now the old tradition has been restored: planting on Candlemas (February 2nd), cultivating on saline, unique soil, fertilized with, among other things, seaweed, and harvesting 90 days later: early May. The harvesting, eating, and trading take place during a festive festival. A customer's tip: this variety tends to grow new tubers upwards, so regular hilling is necessary to prevent green tubers!

EARLY VARIETY FOR GOURMETS.
An early variety mainly means that it grows quickly and is therefore ready for early harvest. The planting time is actually the same as later varieties (April). However, to get an extra early harvest, these varieties are often planted earlier (mid-March with protection from foil or even from January under glass). Early varieties are less susceptible to the dreaded potato blight (Phytophthora infestans). Although the epidemic occurs earlier and earlier: plant sparsely and fertilize with potassium. Do not plant them in too wet a spot, but in good sun. The average planting distance is 70x40 cm, we recommend maintaining 80x40 cm to prevent diseases.
