An important food crop in South America, exciting to try out here!
Since the beginning of the 21st century, our breeder has been breeding and selecting suitable varieties for Northern Europe (including Scandinavia!) from (mainly) Chilean and Peruvian quinoa.
This Puno variety has medium-sized, white seeds, is early-maturing, and is not saponin-free. Saponin is a bitter substance found in the seed coat that negatively affects the taste. Puno therefore requires an additional treatment after the seeds have been cleaned and dried.
Quinoa is an annual plant and belongs to the same genus as lamb's-quarters, curly dock, and ornamental spinach. The leaves can be eaten like spinach, and the flower spikes produce protein- and vitamin-rich seeds that taste like rice. The plant grows to a height of 1 m and even grows at altitudes of up to 4,500 m in Peru and Bolivia!
10–25 g is sufficient for 25 m². Aim for 50–150 plants per m².
