AVAILABLE FROM NOVEMBER AS TUBER AND FROM MAY AS A PLANT.
'Garnet' produces salmon-colored tubers with deep orange flesh. The production of this tasty variety is best realized in a greenhouse or a very sheltered spot.
Originally, this well-known tuber crop has been cultivated for over 5000 years in South America, but by now, this important source of carbohydrates has spread throughout the entire (tropical) world. Besides the (cooked) tuber, the leaves are also very popular as spinach! In Northern Europe, cultivation in the summer is becoming increasingly feasible: plant them on "ridges" which are covered for warmth with black foil or Bio Fiber Mulch. The "starter plants" you purchase can be propagated with cuttings during growth, so that a bed full of plants quickly develops. For later purchases, place the plant(s) in large pot(s) and propagate with cuttings for next year. The plant can overwinter indoors in a light and not too cold room. We supply selections that have been cultivated in our area for several years.
Our active grower constantly searches for the best varieties of Sweet Potatoes for open ground or for the greenhouse. In May-June, he offers us young plants, and in November, the tubers from which you can grow beautiful plants yourself.
WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THE PLANTS?
If you haven't grown plants from a tuber yourself in winter (see below), we have young plants from May onwards to plant out (after the last chance of night frost). The fast-creeping plants need space; plant them 40 cm apart and 80-90 cm between rows. Large raised beds are favorable for soil warmth and thus for yield. Regular watering is very important during dry periods; professional growers often use drip irrigation. Harvest no later than before the first night frosts.
WHAT DO YOU DO WITH SUCH A TUBER?
Just put it in the ground outside? No! Cultivation is a little different from growing seed potatoes. It's a fun job for indoors, in a warm spot. (From May, the job can also be done directly outside if the weather is warm.)
You need a propagator with a high lid, or you can use any tray or pot where one or more tubers can lie flat. In the latter case, it is wise to create a frame over which you stretch plastic for warmth and moisture retention.
Place the tubers (lying flat) in cocopeat 809620-seedling-soil-cocopeat-briquettes
2/3 under the soil. Keep it well lit, moist, and warm; the tuber will produce many shoots. After 5-10 cm of growth, you can break off or cut these close to the tuber and place them directly into a small pot or a swollen Jiffy-7 pellet. Every cutting will root very easily.
There are also other methods, for example, in water; just watch this video on YouTube.
