Ton Vreeken ❞It's almost July, and that means: almost time for everyone to go on holiday! The last few weeks of school for the kids are upon us. Also: congratulations to everyone who heard this month that they passed their exams!
Most people will hopefully soon have a few weeks off work. I hope you can enjoy some sunshine — perhaps some of you have already booked a holiday?
I myself have two weeks off in a week's time. I'm not necessarily going to do anything big then, but in September I'm completely free. I'm still figuring out exactly what I want to do, but one thing is already certain: in the last week, I'm going to Greece with friends, to a mega villa! So: one last push at work, but at least I have something great to look forward to.

Nasturtium!
Colourful, edible and super easy to grow – no wonder this plant is so popular. Good news: we have three popular and sought-after varieties back in stock! Let them climb, creep, or bloom in pots or borders... a treat for your garden and your plate!
✽
558840 – Tropaeolum majus ‘Purple Emperor’This nasturtium stands out with its beautiful flowers in shades from purple-pink to antique rose. The climbing plants are ideal for growing on a trellis or for placing in pots and containers. Like the leaves, the flowers are also edible – adding both colour and flavour to your garden!
✽
558762 – Tropaeolum nanum ‘Ladybird Rose’Due to its extra compact growth, this variety is perfect for smaller spaces – think window boxes, pots, or a sunny corner on the patio. The fresh green, round leaves, like the flowers, are edible and a festive addition to salads. The flowers bloom in soft shades from pink to salmon pink, with charming wine-red spots at the distinctively yellow throat. A beautiful sight and wonderfully versatile!
✽
558760 – Tropaeolum nanum ‘Ladybird Cream’This nasturtium steals the show with its fresh lemon-yellow flowers and deep dark red spots in the heart – a beautiful color contrast! Thanks to its compact growth, this variety is ideally suited for pots, window boxes, or a small (vegetable) garden. Both the leaves and the flowers are edible and give salads a spicy, colorful twist. Practical, decorative, and tasty!

Flower acquisitionsWith strong growth, the Butterfly Pea produces an abundance of elegant, 5 cm single and double flowers with a yellow throat and a beautiful bulge in summer. After flowering, edible pods appear; remove them for a longer flowering period. If grown in a large pot, it can overwinter in a cool place. Give it a sunny to lightly shaded spot and enjoy! Did you know that in Asia, blue Clitoria is used to color rice blue? Unique and beautiful!
This very hardy plant opens its bronze-colored buds into purplish-pink (magenta) flowers that seem almost luminous. The sturdy stems, about 90 cm tall, proudly bear the flowers and stand slightly above the foliage. Butterflies, bees, and other insects love them. Give the cornflower a sunny to semi-shaded spot and enjoy the vibrancy in your garden!
Sturdy stems bear a beautiful orange-bronze flower heart, surrounded by purplish-pink ray florets. This beauty blooms from mid-summer to late autumn and grows to about 100 cm tall. Give it a sunny spot in the garden. It is said that the plant can help boost immunity, for example against colds. Please note: when using medicinal herbs, it is always important to gather good information first!
This elegant perennial sweet pea transforms your garden with its clusters of pearly pink flowers. With its sturdy tendrils, it climbs up to 2 meters high and brightens up every corner, from garden to balcony. A magnet for butterflies and a feast for the eyes! Give it a spot in the sun or light shade and enjoy its long flowering period from June to September. Sow, climb, and admire!

Still to sow in July! There are still plenty of vegetables you can sow in July! I've already highlighted a few favorites for you.
This beautiful red kale, organically grown and with a rich history, comes from the region around Lippstadt. The blue-green 'Lippische Palm' can grow up to 2 meters tall and has slightly curled leaves. Its mild flavor even improves after a night of frost. After sowing, you can easily distinguish between the red- and green-leaved plants. Prune the flower stalks in spring, and you'll have a cheerful perennial tree that will bring you joy for years!
After 35 days, you'll harvest young, deep dark red leaves – beautiful and ideal for salads. Even with less sun, the color remains intense! After 60 days, the bulbs are ripe; sliced raw, they reveal a striking pattern of red and white. So, you can process the thinned plants immediately. A versatile mix of beauty and taste!
This classic among spring onions grows quickly and yields beautiful, firm white bulbs with fresh, green stems. Perfect for use anywhere in the kitchen: from salads to soups and sauces. Its mild, slightly spicy flavor makes it a true flavor enhancer that you won't want to miss. Easily sow them in your garden or in a large pot and harvest throughout the season!
To continue supplying good and fresh grow kits, we are also selling off this product in the summer to clear out the cold room. The composition of the collection may vary slightly, but the discount is the same. The package may contain: mushroom kits and/or plugs.

This well-known tuber has been cultivated in South America for over 5,000 years. This important source of carbohydrates is now spread throughout the entire (sub)tropical world. Besides the (cooked) tuber, the leaves – prepared like spinach – are also very popular. The "starter plants" you purchase can be propagated by cuttings throughout the season, quickly filling a bed with plants.

The grey-green, heart-shaped leaves with a reddish-brown underside are an immediate eye-catcher. The small, single, light pink flowers, which are softly fragrant and edible, bring the plant to about 1 meter in height. This star performer blooms deep into autumn! Give it a semi- to fully shaded, moist spot and let yourself be surprised, year after year. A little winter cover is recommended, as they tolerate frost down to -10°C.
We have beautiful pepper plants that will set your taste buds on fire! Think of the yellow and red Adjuma, and one of the hottest peppers in the world: the Carolina Reaper. A party in your mouth (though perhaps a little less festive after eating).
We also have a collection with all 3 peppers and 2 packets of pepper surprise seeds
This time I'm filling a small section with a few requests, some knowledge, and an interesting article by Franska.
Do you know the beautiful, purple-coloured Bergamot plant? Its full name is Monarda hybrida ‘Bergamo’. It's not a difficult plant, sun-loving, and a gem in your garden for years. But... the seed is not always available, and we find that very unfortunate. We've been able to buy a small amount of seed and are looking for an enthusiastic and meticulous (hobby) grower who can accommodate 10-20 plants and wants to grow seeds for us. An annual delivery, so we can offer them often and in large quantities again! Please contact us at info@vreeken.nl and tell us about your capabilities...
For years, I've been in contact with a Czech grower with a great passion: nut trees and red-fleshed apples are his main dish, but here is a selection from his collection: Walnuts (Juglans), Hickory nuts, Sweet Chestnut, Muscadine grapes, Cornelian cherry, Pear-shaped Rowan, Persimmon, Pawpaw, Red-fleshed Pears, etc. etc.
He has been collecting, propagating, and cultivating these valuable fruit trees through his own crosses for many years to preserve and improve varieties. Due to circumstances, he wants to stop this immensely valuable work and is offering me his entire collection on the condition that it is handled carefully and that the collection remains together as much as possible. It concerns hundreds of young plants, sometimes a few per variety, sometimes dozens per variety. Of the latter batches, plants may, of course, be sold or exchanged; we are happy to think along. Are you interested? Here you will find his collection of Apples and here the rest of his collection.
His nursery is in the Czech Republic, close to the border with Slovakia. He doesn't want anything for it (although a symbolic amount is welcome), you just have to pick it up with a small truck and gather everything yourself and bundle it neatly. All plants are currently potted, which takes up space, but is convenient. Anyone seriously interested can contact me, and I will discuss it further with you...
You are already busy harvesting early potatoes; soon it will be the turn of the late storage potatoes, hopefully they will remain healthy until harvest! That rain is needed, but also dangerous; wet crops are easily infected with potato blight. A nice breeze is often the salvation... Here are some tips to prevent this disease (Phytophthora). But how do you best store those potatoes through the winter? In the past, potatoes were powdered with sprout inhibitors (chlorpropham), but this has rightly been banned since 2020. Farmers are experimenting with nebulizing natural orange oil D-limonene, but this product is not yet available in small packages. For now, I have the following tips:
Good luck!

FrenchFinally, a nice report from Franska! She has a lovely website full of news and facts, interesting to follow. She pointed out that she had mentioned us in a post about her visit to Dordrecht.
We are busy with our annual inventory counts. This means every seed packet, every plant, and all our various items must be counted. It's a huge task every year, but together (and with a bit of stress) we always get through it.
Furthermore, last weekend I went swimming twice at the Wantijbad. On Saturday it was super hot and the sun was glorious. Sunday wasn't as hot — with occasional showers — but if I'm already in the pool, it doesn't really matter if I get wet from the rain.
The day before yesterday I went to the movies: Final Destination: Bloodlines. I was already a fan of that film series, because it's so gruesome and truly amazing how people can come up with such horrific things. I must say: it was a very good movie again. Definitely recommended — if you can handle a bit of blood, that is.
I have also decided that I want to go to the movies more often. Just by myself. Just to take myself on a date more often. (Someone has to do it, right?)
Furthermore, as I said in the first message: I have two weeks of vacation at the end of next week. You have no idea how much I'm looking forward to it…
I'm staying in the Netherlands, but I do want to go on a few nice outings. So: if you have any tips, please let me know!
I also want to thank you for all the nice emails over the past few months, in response to the newsletters I write. I'm not necessarily a mega strong writer, so I find it extra nice that you appreciate them nonetheless.
