No. 64: We're quite something, aren't we.

❝

... for a good holiday season, a good 2017, in short: better to wish well than to curse, right?

Wishes and dreams

As a child, I learned that a wish shouldn't be selfish; it leads you into a spiral of "striving for more," which ends in dissatisfaction! Who still remembers that wonderful story of the Magic Fish and the dwarf couple Piggelmee? The ending was somewhat disappointing for me as a child, because what did you care about Van Nelle coffee at that age, but the message did stick. Later, the fairy tale of Aladdin reinforced these wish-related problems. So I must be careful with my wishes for others and myself; here's a sincere attempt:

For you, I wish a year with much passion and joy in gardening, patience when tasks take a lot of time, patience when the weather is difficult, gentleness when the slugs thought you were feeding them, pride in the result of beautiful blooms, and pride when you cook delicious meals with your own vegetables!

For us as a company, I wish: to make many customers incredibly happy again with our (lovingly curated) collection, energy and job satisfaction for my team of 25 wonderful people, a step further in the company acquisition process (I want to hand over the reins within 8 years), and sufficient revenue to give this labor-intensive business a long future.

New in our assortment

I still have 1 week to devote to extensively recording interesting new species. An enjoyable but time-consuming task, which I will soon have to stop doing as my "regular" work will consume me (100 hours a week). In the past 10 weeks, 110 new varieties have already been added, which you can track monthly on our site.

"May I sell your seeds?"

This question is being asked more and more often, and we are honoured by it! Do you own a special shop that offers personal attention to its customers? An active shop at your allotment complex? An Open Garden, Museum or Botanical Garden? You are all suitable candidates! How does it work?

It starts with the purchase of our sustainable display, which can hold 25 varieties.
We sell these at cost price: € 19.95

Then you can "browse" the site to choose what suits you or your business, to choose for your customers. Of course, there are rules, and we offer a great discount. Think about it, enjoy, and benefit from the great success we are having!

Habselig

A pun among plant enthusiasts – of course, we're talking about HELLEBORUS, also known as Christmas Rose or Lenten Rose. One of our growers is offering a very interesting package, which I'd like to share with you. The package consists of 10 plants of 10 different varieties. We'll collect all orders first and then have the plants delivered from my grower all at once, so please order in advance and don't just show up at the store unannounced... Normally (in garden centers) such a collection of special Helleborus plants costs between €40.00 and €50.00, but we can offer them for €35.00.

Helleborus orientalis - LENTEN ROSE OR CHRISTMAS ROSE

This beauty blooms from February to April, announcing spring for months every year! Give them a spot in the sun or partial shade in well-draining soil that should not dry out. The leaves are green in summer and winter and renew themselves in summer. Deer do not eat this plant!

  • ‘Double White Spotted’ (we supply in 9 cm pot)
  • ‘Double Pink Spotted’ (we supply in 9 cm pot)
  • ‘Dark Rose’ We select beautiful very dark bloomers. (we supply in 12 cm pot)
Helleborus argutifolius - CORSICAN HELLEBORE

A beautiful foliage (with toothed leaves) awaits flowering in winter, which usually begins in February and continues until April as the green-white flowers eventually become greener and give the plant an extra leaf function.

  • ‘Green Leaves’ grey-green foliage (we supply in 9 cm pot)
  • ‘Silver Lace’ silver-green foliage (we supply in 9 cm pot)
Helleborus x sternii

This is a cross between H. argutifolius and lividus, combining the best of both: evergreen with beautiful, 60 cm high flower stalks in late winter with green-pink flowers.

  • ‘Green Leaves’ grey-green foliage (we supply in 9 cm pot)
  • ‘Silver Lace’ silver-green foliage (we supply in 9 cm pot)
Helleborus lividus

This Hellebore from Mallorca has finer, usually toothed leaves, green with a grey haze. The immensely prolific blooms are green-white to dark pink in color; the outer petals and flower stalks are beautifully pink and extra visible due to the nodding flowers. Flowering sometimes begins as early as December and continues until March; in severe frost, an acrylic blanket is recommended...

  • ‘Pink’ (we supply in 12 cm pot)
  • ‘Lilac’ (we supply in 12 cm pot)
  • ‘White’ (we supply in 12 cm pot)

Lectures for your garden club

A few years ago, we stopped attending markets and fairs, and I myself (after 25 years of traveling across the Netherlands) stopped giving lectures. Simply no more time and focused on other activities. I regularly hear from colleagues that they host very engaging evenings, and with this, I present to you:

Jan Kuiperij from Doetinchem!

From his own experience, he gives a fascinating, evening-filling talk about growing vegetables "From your own Garden". The content of such an evening can be found in this document; highly recommended!

Behind the scenes

Months of preparation are nearing a final sprint. Since July 2016, we have been working tirelessly filling seed packets; tens of thousands are ready and sorted. Still, many growers deliver at the last minute... The coming weeks will be dedicated to filling potato orders. A whopping 112 different varieties are arriving, many new additions. Order them in time, because demand is high. Furthermore, next week part of the onion sets, shallots, and two more garlic varieties from France will arrive. Our storage rooms will be bursting again! Finally, in February, the flower bulbs will arrive, and then the big celebration can begin. Of course, we are already busy with deliveries. We are happy to send orders with early sowing varieties in two stages so that you can already start. Next week will be another cold week, but who knows what will happen after that...?

My wife Marry is currently volunteering on Lesbos for Stichting Bootvluchteling.
With this cold weather, conditions there are inhumane, and I heartily recommend your financial support!
I am proud of the loyal group of volunteers and workers who care for people in harsh conditions!

Greetings from Dordrecht and a warm welcome to our site or in the shop!
