Growing sprouts (without soil or a mat) requires a bit more technique. Light is needed for growing indoors, I've mentioned that before. In winter, the days are short, and behind a window, you already lose 50% of the light that's on the other side of that window. Light ensures that your plants (for example, your just germinating seeds) become compact and sturdy. That's why with too little light, your plants become long and thin.
