Still going with those wishesIf only we could work a little magic and give all those beautiful wishes at the beginning of 2023 a positive boost! As Seedsaver of the Low Countries, we don't want to be left behind and will stick to what we can do: first and foremost, I wish you much enjoyment in growing and bringing to fruition many vegetables and flowers. Furthermore, I hope and wish that you are able to do so with sufficient mobility and health! Finally, I wish that we may surprise you for many years to come with all the treasures that the plant world holds.

The Axe!After these heartfelt sentences, a quick commercial message.
We still have some Spring-flowering Bulbs left over. Apparently, the Corona years made me a bit too enthusiastic when purchasing. I also see it with our suppliers; everyone has bulbs left over, which are then planted again. However, we don't have our own test garden (anymore), so we really need to clear out the last remaining stock. Perhaps an idea to donate a nice package to your favorite neighborhood location? A nursing home? A family member with a large garden?
I'm keeping the entry price low and the discount extra high, so you can easily order several packages for multiple purposes. If we still have some left over after that, we'll send packages ourselves to people or institutions who will be happy with them. Everything has to go, because the Summer-flowering Bulbs are already knocking on the door and are even starting to arrive little by little!
May I direct the spotlight to these 4 current species:
✽
Jerusalem artichokesThey've just arrived again, a wonderful harvest of 13 top varieties of Jerusalem Artichokes. When we reintroduced this hardy tuber to the Netherlands about 35 years ago, it was truly a Forgotten Vegetable. For recipes, you had to look in French cookbooks under the name Topinambour. Nowadays, you'll find this healthy tuber in many dishes, appreciated for its special taste and healthy addition.
Jerusalem Artichokes are 100% frost-resistant, so you can buy them now and plant them immediately (if possible).

RhubarbThis beautiful and healthy plant fits in every vegetable garden and ornamental garden, even in a large pot. Out of winter, the plants are dormant and can therefore be most easily transplanted: as a root tuber. We sell 6 very well-known varieties. Of course, the Rhubarb Forcing Jars are very attractive, providing a first harvest of mild-tasting rhubarb. Our Rhubarb Forcing Jars are hand-thrown in the Netherlands (heavy work) and fired as hot as possible for optimal weather resistance.

Outings for Pregnant WomenSuch a name piques my curiosity. This beautiful houseplant can only go outside in the summer, but you'll enjoy it even more indoors! The lance-shaped leaves grow from a (ever-growing) bulb, which is planted above ground. The clusters of 50-100 greenish-white flowers per stem betray its kinship with the Cape Lily, Star of Bethlehem, and Ornithogalum. It blooms in the summer on sturdy stems 70-90 cm long. Small bulbs spontaneously grow at the base, so you'll get cloned babies...
We bought a large batch of bulbils for you and have started them growing in a pot. A young plant that you'll keep sharing with friends and family! Interested?

ChayoteThe success fruit of recent years! We have already excited hundreds of customers about this easy-to-grow climbing plant with delicious fruits. They have an exotic appearance and go well with many dishes, from stir-fries to salads and soups. Will you discover them with us?

The busy-ness is already hitting us again...Actually, from the last week of December, things picked up again here. You found us in full force, both online and physically in the store. Large and small orders, we appreciate them all, and I try to present you with the most complete and constantly updated assortment possible.
The potato purchase has now been fully completed, which means the collection has been completely planned. Of course, not all varieties have arrived yet, but you can already order our selection of over 100 varieties online.
For the Summer Flowering Bulbs, I still need 1 week to have the assortment and prices completely up to date. Many new varieties will be added; unfortunately, the Caladium harvest failed, and we had so many new varieties in mind... Next year, then. I hope to welcome you again this winter or spring!
I'm preparing for a busy period of days, evenings, and sometimes working longer hours. We already have a small evening team of order pickers, often consisting of young people who are studying or are "in between" two studies. If you know any diligent young people in our area (older is fine too), please send me an email at info@vreeken.nl
On January 15th, we are going to Swan Lake, performed by the Bulgarian State Opera Stara Zagora. It will be my first time seeing it live, and that's something you simply must experience at least once. Tchaikovsky is one of my favorite composers, and with ballet, I momentarily forget about my own weight...
Our holidays were very enjoyable; hours of talking and listening are a pleasure for me, and the culinary additions complete the joy. A dark cloud is my wife's persistent deep cough; this is the last week we'll "wait and see." I even had some discomfort for a day, which is very unusual, but hardly worth mentioning... A good friend of ours had to rush to the hospital, and that's also a bit tense right now. So it's another period of living and empathizing; many of you will recognize this.
Until next time!
