830380-1
Mid-late Strawberry 'Jucunda'

(1852) We received this old variety from our home grower Leen van de Nadort, and a helpful visitor to our site provided further details: thanks, Staf Elst.
The breeder of this variety is John Salter (1798-1874), an English florist and discoverer of new chrysanthemum varieties. After a stay in Versailles, France, he settled in Hammersmith near London. He became interested in strawberries and quickly developed several new varieties of little significance. Until, in 1852, he developed the 'Jucunda' variety, a world-class strawberry. The taste is typical of a historical strawberry: aromatic and mildly sweet, fairly small in size, but with enormous productivity and suitable for growing in any type of soil. Therefore, after 1945 until about 1965, this variety was widely cultivated on sandy soils in the Zundert region (the south of North Brabant) and Hoogstraten (the Belgian Noorderkempen), where sandy soil is not suitable for all strawberry cultivations. The Belgian grower Elst (Staf's father) was the first pioneer in that area to make a profession out of growing strawberries. Jucunda quickly became an internationally commercial strawberry, particularly suitable for "pulping," freezing, and jam making. The variety was able to maintain itself for over 100 years but was displaced by 'Senga Sengana,' which in turn was displaced by the arrival of 'Gorella,' which was replaced by 'Elsanta' around 1980. Fortunately, we have been able to preserve all these old varieties from extinction, because for a hobbyist, it's not just about yield, but also unique taste and... the story! For the name, John Salter may have been influenced by the Mona Lisa he had seen in the Louvre in Paris during his stay in Versailles. Mona Lisa is called La Joconde in French and "Jucunda" in Latin. Give 'Jucunda' good drainage, as a very wet summer causes problems (as with all old varieties) in the form of "snotterigheid" (runny fruit).

Our strawberry collection partly consists of rare old varieties, which are only sporadically available. Therefore, the waiting time can be long. In July, a new crop is potted annually by our grower, which is delivered in August-September. In April-May, we can replenish part of this assortment. Please note that postage costs may apply for any subsequent deliveries.

Names:
Latin: Fragaria x ananassa
Dutch: Mid-late Strawberry
Also known as: Jucunda
English: Strawberry
